Keyword density is the measure (in %) of the weight that one given keyword (or keyword phrase) has regarding the text (including code) of one given page HTML. Major international search engines (as Altavista) consider Spamming and therefore they strongly penalize one keyword density advanced to the 5/6%.
Google instead seems not to penalize one high keyword density to the inside of one page: the software of Google is planned in order to penalize keywords that come repeated to the infinite that clearly have the single scope to trick Googlebot. This is the reason why, when we optimize a webite from this point of view, we prefer to speak about high keyword pattern, rather than high keyword density.
KEYWORD PATTERN
Keyword pattern is nothing but the measure in which the keywords appear within a normal text paragraph, among other words and without repeating keyword one after the other. In other words a method in order to rise the density (and therefore the relevance) of keyword we have chosen and avoiding the fear of being penalized.

Here the intention to trick the spider of Google is clear. A technique like this makes you seriously risk to being announced publicly like spammer. Always remember that Google wants to be a simulation of a human being who reads, judges, and catalogues. Repeating keywords one after the other is a sure method for being penalized and low-rated

Our plastic mouse has been winning the Best Plastic mouse awards since 1999 and today we can ensure that our Plastic Mouse is the Best one around.
Notice that the keyword phrase "plastic mouse" has been found 3 times into the paragraph. Same happened is example 01. The difference between the two techniques is that the first technique will cause you to be penalized by Google.
 Don't waste time by calculating "keyword density" using one of the available free tools on the Net. Don't waste time by guessing if a 20% KD may help you more than a 5% one. KD is just one of the famous 100 factors that play a role in Google Ranking: always be sure that your keywords (making them bold can help you a lot) have a strong relevance inside your page pattern, then just sit back, relax and watch the results ;-)
